Education — From Elders to Children
In Ghanaian culture, education is not limited to the classroom. Long before formal schooling, children learn through storytelling, proverbs, songs, and direct observation. Grandmothers teach daughters how to prepare soup; fathers teach sons how to farm; elders teach the community how to resolve conflicts with wisdom.
The proverb "When you follow the path of your father, you learn to walk like him" captures this perfectly. Education is a communal responsibility — it takes a village to raise a child, and every adult has a role in shaping the young.
In modern Ghana, this coexists with formal schooling. Civic education and independence history are taught in schools. The pledge recited by schoolchildren each morning — "I promise on my honour to be faithful and loyal to Ghana my motherland" — is not empty words; it is the planting of a seed that bears fruit for a lifetime.
National Festival
NAFAC
The National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFAC) is Ghana's premier cultural showcase, bringing together performers, artists, and cultural groups from all sixteen regions. It is a vibrant, colourful celebration of everything that makes Ghana unique.
At NAFAC, students perform traditional dances like Agbadza — the energetic war dance of the Ewe people — and Adowa — the elegant, graceful dance of the Akan, characterised by subtle hand movements and rhythmic footwork that tells stories without words.
NAFAC is more than entertainment — it is a national investment in cultural preservation. By giving young people a platform to celebrate their heritage, it ensures traditions are not lost to modernisation. It teaches the youth that their culture is worthy of the world's attention.
